Ramon Casas, portraits from Modernism

More than twenty works by Ramon Casas (1866-1932) are held at Montserrat. First-rate oil paintings that arrived at the museum mainly through the donation of Josep Sala Ardiz, as well as several charcoal and pastel portraits resulting from subsequent donations.

His works convey the atmosphere of Paris, with interior portraits where Casas focuses on detail in the female figure, immersing the viewer in the actions and attitudes of the characters. On the other hand, they also reflect the painter's taste for the folklore of the era, featuring ladies wearing mantillas, peinetas, and shawls, with bullfights being a frequent subject. All of them bring us closer to the tastes of the time and of the artist, to modernity, to the painter's family life, and to the everyday existence of the bourgeoisie.

The collection of Ramon Casas at the Museum of Montserrat, where he is one of the best-represented painters along with Santiago Rusiñol, houses internationally recognized masterpieces and represents one of the most important collections of Ramon Casas's work in our region.
